Ukraine European Cup 2012: Euro 2012 Odds & Group D Predictions

Ukraine Euro 2012: Hosts Will Have Their Chances In Group D: Attack, attack, attack. That is going to be the motto this year for Ukraine, as it prepares for the Euro 2012 that it is hosting. The Ukrainians are clearly going to have a chance this year to do some real damage in this tournament, but they are going to need to make sure that they overachieve on their home front to make as big of a case for being one of the top teams in Europe.

In comparison to Poland, there is no doubt that Ukraine has the tougher of the draws of the two hosts. Playing in a group with England and France clearly isn’t going to be all that easy, and even this opening match against Sweden isn’t going to be a cakewalk by any stretch of the imagination either. Still, with matches coming at home, there is no doubt that the possibility is there that the hosts can prevail even though they are ranked just No. 52 in the world, along the same lines as teams like Zambia (43), Montenegro (50), Armenia (51), El Salvador (55), and Honduras (56).

What we know about the Ukrainians is that they are going to attack, and they are going to continue to pile on the pressure in virtually every game that they play. That doesn’t mean that they are going to be scoring goals, but they definitely are going to be trying their damnedest. There are five strikers on this team that are going to be used on a regular basis. We figure to see Andriy Shevchenko, the team’s most talented and veteran striker off of the bench, especially in close matches. These five players have played in a tremendous 276 games between them. Shevchenko has 46 goals to his credit for his country, while the rest of the strikers combined have 23.

Defensively, there are a heck of a lot of problems, though. Andriy Pyatov is going to be the net minder for this team, but the Shakhtar Donetsk keeper just isn’t the best in the world. In front of him, there isn’t a defender that has played in even 30 games for his country. We do think that Pyatov’s teammate, Yaroslav Rakitskiy is a man that has a lot of potential on both sides of the ball. He has played in 17 matches in his career for Ukraine, but he also has scored three times in those matches.

The problem here is that all of these teams have a lot of potential offensively ,and none of them are ridiculously bad defensively in Group D. That being said, they have the help of playing at home, where they are going to be glad to be playing again. Their last two matches before this tournament came on the road at Turkey and Austria, and in those games, it should be no surprise that the squad conceded five total goals, losing 2-0 to the Turks and 3-2 to the Austrians. Before that though, there has been a lot for the Ukrainians to smile at. They netted four against Estonia, two against Austria, three against Germany, and three against Bulgaria at home in the last few months.

Ukraine 2012 Euro Championship Tips & Euro 2012 Betting Odds: BetOnline Sportsbook is featuring the Ukrainians to get out of this group at +140. That being said, they are a 4 to 1 underdog to win this group, but they are at least a tad in front of the Swedes. Poland has the slightly better chance to win this tournament because of the fact that Group A is so iffy, but the Ukrainians have the more talented side. Still, Ukraine is 50 to 1 to be the champ of its own tournament at home, which makes it one of the big time have nots in Euro 2012.
