Neither one of these teams are exactly in good shape right now. Egypt probably figured that it was going to be in some trouble when it took on the Brazilians in its first match of the tournament, but it had a chance to snare a point at the death and failed when a second half comeback came up just short. New Zealand dropped a one-goal match as well, but it didn’t look nearly as confident against Belarus in a match that one would figure that it really had to win in order to have a chance of qualifying for the second round of this tournament.

New Zealand still has a heck of a lot of work to do if it is ever going to get in the international spotlight. The squad has just three draws and three losses to show for six matches in two World Cup appearances, and it now has three losses and a draw in two group stage appearances here in the Summer Olympics over the course of the last two World Cups as well. The team was absolutely dominated from start to finish by a Belarus team that isn’t exactly known for its prowess on the pitch either. Sure, Belarus only won the match 1-0, and there were definitely some chances for the All Whites to get back in the match. However, if you look at the stats, you needn’t look very hard to see which was the better team. New Zealand was outshot 24-7, and Belarus had a 10-3 edge in terms of shots on goal. New Zealand had just two corner kicks for the whole game, and just 33% of the possession. That has to improve if the All Whites have any chance whatsoever of getting into the knockout rounds.

Meanwhile, Manager Hany Ramzy has to be thrilled with the effort that his Egyptians put out three days ago against Brazil. They fell behind 3-0 in the first half hour and looked to be dead in the water going into the locker room. However, whatever speech was given by Ramzy was clearly one for note, as Mohamed Aboutrika and Mohamed Salah both found their way onto the scoring sheet with strikes at 52′ and 76′ respectively. The effort was game for sure, especially at the back. The fact that the offensive minded Brazilians only managed to get 13 shots, six of which got on target and just 53% of the possession was certainly notable. In the end though, this is the type of team that Egypt is going to have to beat in order to win the gold medals this year, and as one of the most experienced Olympic teams in the world, it would be brutally disappointing to not get three points in this match to get back in the Group C competition.

Egypt vs. New Zealand Match Preview & Analysis: If the All Whites aren’t going to end up getting better possession of the rock in this one, they are going to get laughed off the pitch. As long as the Egyptians figure out how to get control of the ball and come out full of sound and fury, they should be able to take three points in relatively easy fashion. Don’t be all that surprised if this ends up being quite the one-sided romp when push comes to shove.
