2012 Manchester United Season Preview: The 2012 Manchester United season is sure to be one of concern for Manager Sir Alex Fergusson. The team didn’t go quietly into the offseason though, and Manchester United’s players are set to take yet another run at glory, as the Red Devils seek their 13th Premiership championship and their 20th ever English football crown. Here is the 2012 Man Utd schedule and fixtures, and the players with which they will have to take the road to Premier League glory once again.

2012 Manchester United News & Scores: The Red Devils are going to be starting the year off in relatively easy fashion, as there really is no excuse not to turn up with at least 10 points, if not all 12 from the team’s first four fixtures before heading to Anfield to take on Liverpool. The most brutal stretch of the season is clearly when the team has to take on Manchester City, Stoke City, Aston Villa, Arsenal, and Chelsea in a span of just four weeks towards the end of the year. That’s the type of run of fixtures that champions are made up of, and we know that the Red Devils are going to have to do well then to be able to claim more silverware in 2012.

2012 Manchester United Squad (Updated 8/16/12)

Goalies: David de Gea, Anders Lindegaard
Defenders: Patrice Evra, Phil Jones, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling, Nemanja Vidic, Rafael
Midfielders: Antonio Valencia, Anderson, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Nani, Ashley Young, Paul Scholes, Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Nick Powell, Shinji Kagawa
Forwards: Dimitar Berbatov, Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda, Bebe, Robin van Persie

Manchester United Squad Analysis (As of 8/16/12): Needless to say, this is going to be quite the season for the Red Devils. They are going to once again by stout up front, knowing that Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are going to arguably make for the most lethal scoring tandem in the Premiership. Dimitar Berbatov is likely going to be the odd man out, while Danny Welbeck will surely get his starts in the lineup at times as well. It’s going to be difficult for Fergusson to sit any of these players for any period of time, and the idea of starting with three in the front quite a bit might be appealing. The midfield features a nice mix of veterans and youngsters, but the key man at the back is of course, Nemanja Vidic, the team’s captain. He was out for half the season last year, and that’s when United looked vulnerable at the back. With Vidic in there, David de Gea looked like a star in the pipes at times, and that’s the direction that the Red Devils need to go again to be able to succeed.

The top of the Premier League table will be determined on Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford, as arguably the two best teams in England duke it out when Manchester United takes on Manchester City in the biggest derby of the year.

Though Chelsea is just a single point behind United and three behind City, there is no doubt that the two sides from Manchester have been the most impressive of all this year. They are two of the three sides that have not been beaten on the campaign (joining the surprises of the Premier League season, Newcastle United), and they have combined to score 52 goals against 12 allowed in eight fixtures apiece.

Nigel De Jong, the heart and soul of this Man City side, claims that his team is traveling to Old Trafford as the table toppers and should be treated as such. And why not? The team has more goals away from home this year (14) than as the guests (13).

The Citizens do have some results that are worth being concerned about this year, though. They were beaten in the Champions League at Bayern Munich 2-0 in a game in which they were thoroughly dominated, and they also only drew 2-2 at Craveners Cottage against Fulham back on September 18th.

Even though Carlos Tevez looks like he will never suit up in the light blue again, this is still a team with some awesome firepower. Man City dropped a pair of goals, including a late winner on Villarreal on Tuesday night in the Champions League, and it has scored at least two goals in all of its Premier League fixtures this year.

Of course, the Red Devils have all of the pride, history, and tradition on their side in this one, and they are hoping to snare three points to get back to the top of the table where they feel they belong.

United was unlucky not to snare all three points at Anfield against Liverpool last weekend, as it was equalized late on in a match that could have been much, much worse. That being said, this isn’t a team that is in fine form right now. A 2-0 win at doormats, Otelul Galati in the Champions League on Tuesday only came courtesy of two penalty kicks by Wayne Rooney, and prior to that, the team only has one win (home against Norwich City) in its last five total matches.

These two teams have already met once this year, and it was a thrilling match to say the least. City took a 2-0 lead in the Community Shield, only to cough that lead up. Ultimately, Man U was able to steal the Cup at the death. Nani, who is emerging as a leader on this veteran side, netted the equalizer in the 58th minute and the winner in stoppage time for the Red Devils.

Probably more thanks to their names than anything else, United gets the slight nod from the oddsmakers in this one at even money to take all three points. We tend to fancy the Citizens though, as they truly might have the best side in England this season and could prove it in the biggest match of the year to date on Sunday.

Man U Soccer – Manchester United vs. FC Basel Predictions

Our Group C Champions League picks continue this week with a fantastic clash between two powers with a chance to make some real noise in the UCL. Manchester United will welcome FC Basel to Old Trafford in search of its first win on the European campaign in 2011.

The Red Devils were held on the road at Benfica in their first chance at three points in the Champions League, but Manager Sir Alex Fergusson isn’t going to be overly worried about that whole ordeal. Should Man U not end up cashing in on this home fixture and only have either one or two points through two matches, then there will be some cause for concern.

Over the weekend, Manchester United’s 1-0 lead at Stoke City went by the wayside when long time Premier League vet, Peter Crouch equalized for a 1-1 draw. It was the first match this year in which United didn’t pick up all three points, but the team still sits atop the Premier League table in spite of the mediocre result at Britannia Stadium.

Still, Manchester United’s offense has been fantastic this season, all the way from the first fixtures of the preseason in the World Football Challenge. The team has scored at least two goals in 11 of its 13 fixtures, with the only two duds being the 1-1 draw at Stoke and the 1-1 draw at Benfica. Thus far at home on the campaign, the Old Trafford faithful have seen a whopping 14 goals light up the scoreboard in just three fixtures.

Basel has come through a tough start to the season to make it to this point, but Alexander Frei and company are going to hope to pull off a bit of a miracle on the road on English soil this week.

The Swiss side has struggled just a tad domestically, as it is in fourth position on the table through 10 matches, though it does have the second best goal differential in the league at +10. This is most certainly out of character for a team that has truly dominated in this country over the past several years, and this is clearly the best chance that any team has in Switzerland of making some noise in the Champions League.

An opening match in the Champions League was a bit questionable against the newcomers in this tournament, the Romanian side Otelul Galati. Frei needed an 84th minute penalty to take down this fixture and to secure three points that would have been disastrous to lose. That being said, Basel only had six shots, four of which hit the target, numbers which paled in comparison to those of the Romanian new boys.

Live Manchester United vs. Chelsea – Man U vs. Chelsea Football Club

Two of the storied sides in the EPL are going to be squaring off on Sunday in the biggest game on the Premier League schedule this week, as Manchester United faces the Chelsea Football Club!

Right now, it doesn’t look like there is anything out there that can stop any of the Manchester sides. Both Manchester United and Manchester City ended up drawing 1-1 in their first Champions League matches on Wednesday, so perhaps both are there for the taking, but you know that Manager Sir Alex Fergusson was more concerned about this week’s match against the Blues.

The Red Devils are 4-0-0 on the campaign and are a whopping +15 already in goal differential. Rio Ferdinand should be back in the fold this week after missing the UCL affair with Benfica on Wednesday, and he should help out a defense which has been fantastic. The only questionable part of this unit is the play of keeper David De Gea. De Gea was replaced for the first round Champions League duel by Anders Lindegaard, but he will be back in the saddle for this one.

Wayne Rooney already has eight goals scored this year, and he has been so good that his skipper has compared him to the legendary Pele. To put all of that in comparison, Chelsea has seven goals in total in the same four games.

It’s not like the Blues have been slacking, though. They are 3-1-1, and their one draw came at a game Stoke City side trying to prove that it truly belongs in the EPL on the opening day of the season. Since that point, Chelsea FC has won four straight fixtures, including a Champions League tie with Bayer Leverkusen at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

On this fantastic run of four matches, the Blues have scored nine goals by nine different players. Names like John Terry, Frank Lampard, and Nicolas Anelka have had their share of duels here at Old Trafford, and the hope is that experience against the Red Devils will pay dividends this weekend.

Petr Cech spent two weeks out of action with a knee injury, but he came back last week. Though he couldn’t keep a clean sheet in a 2-1 win against Sunderland, he did leave the donut on the board against Bayer on Tuesday. This is a challenge like he hasn’t seen this season though, and this could be incredibly difficult to keep United off of the scoreboard.

Last year, there were five meetings between these two teams. Man U took down the Community Shield at the outset of the season, and then won three of the four clashes during the season, including both in the Champions League quarterfinals. Chelsea’s lone win was at Stamford Bridge in March, a 2-1 decision. The Blues did beat United in all three 2009 meetings.

Don’t be shocked if this is a close run tie for the entire way. The Red Devils are slender -120 favorites on the three-way soccer lines at Bet365. The ‘total’ has been set at 2.5, over -105.

Manchester City 2011-12 Premier League Odds Could Be Key to Victory

Manchester United Manager Sir Alex Fergusson has referred to Manchester City as his team’s, “Noisy neighbors” in years past, but this season, it could be the Citizens who finally overtake the Red Devils as the top team in Manchester.

Man City is the second favorite on the board on the odds to win the English Premiership at 7/2 at Bet365, and we tend to believe that this is the year that that could cash in. Manager Roberto Mancini has assembled a team full of stars, but there is a question whether all of this spending was done in good taste, or just with a reckless abandon.

Sergio Aguero is the newest signing for the Citizens, coming over from Atletico Madrid as one of the newest strikers in the Premier League. He joins fellow newcomers Gael Clichy and Stefan Savic, adding to a team that had already spent well over 100 million pounds last season. Last year’s spending was parlayed into a Champions League bid for this season and an FA Cup title. On Sunday, the team will challenge the Red Devils for the FA Community Shield.

The big question is whether last summer’s major signing, Carlos Tevez is going to stay with the team or not. Tevez either scored or set up nearly half of Man City’s goals last season in the Premier League, and if he stays, he is sure to challenge for a second straight Golden Boot after tying Manchester United’s Dimitar Berbatov for top league honors in 2010-11. The problem that Tevez has is that City’s signing of Aguero really leaves a bit of a logjam for time up front. Tevez and Aguero seem like they’re shoe ins up front, but the possibility is definitely there for Edin Dzeko (even though he only scored two goals in the league all of last season), Craig Bellamy (whom many feel will be transferred before the start of the season), Emmanuel Adebayor, and Roque Santa Cruz. Mario Balotelli was a regular in the Starting XI last year as well and should factor into the rotation in some form.

A young net minder in Joe Hart won the Golden Glove last season with 18 clean sheets, nearly half of Manchester City’s league matches, and he is sure to be helped a heck of a lot by adding Clichy, a former Arsenal defender, to his back line. Savic will also be back there with Vincent Kompany, the man who very well could be the next captain of this squad should Tevez leave. Gary Cahill and Aleksander Kolarov are also both possibilities, while Kolo Toure remains with the squad to boot.

The midfield is chock full of names for this team as well. The Citizens know that Shaun Wright-Phillips has a ton of Premiership experience with some top notch clubs, while Nigel De Jong is also expecting better in his second year with Man City. David Silva is one of the best striking midfielders in the world when he is healthy, and both Yaya Toure and Adam Johnson have shown flashes of brilliance to boot.

The question is whether all of this improvement for the Citizens has really drawn them that much closer to the 19-time champs. Manchester United is sure to be looking for title No. 20 this season, but if Hart can keep his cool and Mancini can find himself a comfortable balance in his Starting XI, Man City is definitely going to make a huge challenge this season at its first Premier League title since 1967-68.
