Euro 2012 Group D: England vs. Ukraine Tips, Predictions, & Picks

Euro 2012 England vs. Ukraine: Three Lions To Move To Quarters: One of the hosts of Euro 2012, Poland, has already been knocked out of this tournament. Now, the other co-host is going to be up against it on Monday night at Donbass Arena when Ukraine has to take on England in the final match for both teams here in Group D. This could be quite the offensive affair, as both of these teams have shown the ability to score goals, and the well-needed boost from getting Wayne Rooney back in the lineup might be just what the Brits need in this crucial match for both sides. Our England vs. Ukraine tips are set to rock and roll here at TSS, and we think that we have a great angle for this Euro 2012 fixture.

With four points to show for their work in their two matches, England is clearly the team that is in the driver’s seat. It knows that it will be able to get into the second round with just a draw, though a win will likely be the only way that the team has a shot of getting into the knockout rounds as the Group D winners. For Ukraine, the test is going to be quite simple. It’s win and in, lose or draw and go home. The Ukrainians know after a 2-0 loss to the French four days ago, that they are now in a position where they are going to need to take care of business and get all three points, or their tournament is going to be over even if the French get knocked off by Sweden at Metalist Stadium in a match running concurrently.

Manager Roy Hodgson has his first real dilemma of a decision that has to be made before this match gets underway. Wayne Rooney is back from his two-match suspension, and he figures to be in the Starting XI regardless of what else happens. Does that mean that Andy Carroll is headed to the bench? It could be a possibility, though the idea of leaving Danny Welbeck out of the Starting XI is a possibility as well. Knowing that a draw is good enough to get the job done, we figure that the idea of using three strikers it out of the realm of possibility for Hodgson and the Three Lions, though the mindset has to at least somewhat be enticing to put all three on the field at the same time. The English really did well four days ago playing against Sweden in what proved to be one of the more impressive feats of the tournament. England led 1-0 but fell behind 2-1 after an own goal that threatened to really kill the team’s shots at getting into the knockout rounds. That being said, Theo Walcott came off of the bench to equalize for the Three Lions, and Welbeck scored the goal with less than a quarter of an hour remaining in the match to send them to victory and to bounce the Swedes out of the tournament.

We really figured that Ukraine was going to be the team that put on the offensive clinic here in its homeland. We saw some of that on display with Andriy Shevchenko in the opening match against Sweden, as he led a personal comeback from down 1-0 to take a 2-1 lead with back to back strikes within 10 minutes of one another. Aside from that burst of electricity from the team’s veteran leader though, there hasn’t been a single goal to speak of. The chances just weren’t there against the defense of Les Bleus in the last match, and a crushing 0-2 score line was the end result. That means that now, it will be to Shevchenko to most likely go the full 90 minutes once again to get the job done in what should be quite the massive offensive attack against England.

England vs. Ukraine Match Preview & Analysis: The Brits have been known to have some breakdowns at the back, but we don’t think that they are going to be in the worst shape in the world in this one. They are clearly the better of these two teams, and though there might be a moment of brilliance coming out of Shevchenko in what very well could be his last international match for his country, we just don’t think that it is going to be enough.

Euro 2012 Group D: Ukraine vs. France Tips, Predictions, & Picks

Euro 2012 Ukraine vs. France: Ukraine To Punish French, Move On To Round 2: The Ukraine Euro 2012 campaign officially has the ability to be called a smashing success on Friday afternoon at Donbass Arena if the hosts of the tourney can figure out how to take three points against France. Group D is one of the tighter groups right now in Euro 2012, and it is going to be interesting for sure to see how these teams come out of the blocks in their second match day of Euro 2012. Check out our Euro Cup picks and our Ukraine vs. France betting tips for this outstanding match!

The importance of this match cannot be understated. If there is a winner of this match, that team is going to be in remarkable shape as we move towards the knockout rounds of the tournament. Ukraine will be through with a win. France will be within one more point with a win. A draw for both sides isn’t the end of the world, but the French are setting themselves up for a potential disaster if they only get a point or don’t get anything out of this one. A point parlayed with a win for England over Sweden, and all of a sudden, the distinct possibility of a “wink, wink” draw between England and Ukraine in the final fixture becomes a real possibility. However, Ukraine can’t go lightly in this match, knowing that it is going to need to take at least one point from these two matches with France and England to get into the second round.

This is going to be quite the interesting outing, as there is a big time clash in styles. We know that Ukraine is going to try to keep the crowd in the duel by running up and down the pitch. What we already have seen from the hosts is that no lead is safe. Sweden looked like it was going to get all three points against Ukraine until Andriy Shevchenko came up big with consecutive goals in less than 10 minutes. The argument could be made right now that Shevchenko is the most important man in this tournament, and he is definitely the hero for the hosts. This is an offensive minded team that is going to be all over the pitch for sure, though there are some real questions at the back, especially after letting Zlatan Ibrahimovic run wild at times through the last line of defense.

And then there’s the question about the French offense. We did see Samir Nasir come up with a remarkable run and an even more remarkable finish against England, but aside from that, Les Bleus really didn’t have all that much to be proud of in the fixture from an offensive standpoint. They controlled the share of the possession, keeping the ball for 60 percent of the action, and they had 19 total shots, 15 of which went on net. There weren’t all that many phenomenal chances, though. Statistically, France was probably the best team in Group D four days ago, but that doesn’t mean all that much now that the squad only really has one point to show for its work.

Ukraine vs. France Match Preview & Analysis: The French defense isn’t going to hold Ukraine to just 40 percent of the possession and just one shot on target as it did against England. The Three Lions were a mess that day and really didn’t have most of their powerful offensive players in the fold. The Ukrainians absolutely will. We expect this to be a tight match from the get go, and all the way through, and in the end, we wouldn’t be all that shocked if the host nation ended up stealing three points and a spot in the quarterfinals right at the death to baffle Les Bleus.

Euro 2012 Betting Tips: Who Will Win Ukraine vs. Sweden Match?

Soccer Betting Tips for Euro 2012: Expect More Offense In Group D Finale: Ukraine vs. Sweden Euro 2012 is expected to be one of the more interesting and entertaining fixtures on the slate, as both of these teams have the ability to really light it up, especially in the second halves of duels on the pitch. On Monday afternoon in Ukraine though, it will be the second host nation that is under the most scrutiny, as this is a fixture that the team really has to win, one would think, if it wanted to get out of Group D and into the quarterfinals.

Expect to see both of these teams going for broke, and for good reason on Monday. The best case scenario for the match earlier in the day might be for France to beat England. At that point, Sweden will have a shot to essentially finish the Three Lions off in the next match that the two will play on Friday, and if that is the case for Ukraine, England might have absolutely squat left to play for when push comes to shove on the final match day of the group. That being said, whichever team is the loser of this one knows that it is going to be a tough, uphill battle for either one to get into the second round, and a draw ultimately might not do much for either squad either.

Obviously the first thing that comes to mind when you’re talking about these two teams is the ability to score goals. And of course, when you’re talking about goals, you’re talking about Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the Swedes and Andriy Shevchenko for the Ukrainians. Shevchenko isn’t going to be in the lineup at the start of this match in all likelihood, but if that turns out to be the case, he is likely going to come on as a sub, especially if his team needs some extra offensive firepower after halftime. Ibrahimovic on the other hand, will almost surely be going the whole 90 minutes, and he is always a threat to score for his country when he is on the field.

Defensively, there isn’t a heck of a lot to like on either of these teams. There isn’t a goalie for one of the world’s best on either side, and that has to be worrisome, especially knowing just how many net minders have struggled and struggled mightily over the course of the first few days of Euro 2012. Remember that both Shay Given for Ireland and Petr Cech for the Czech Republic, both of which play their club soccer at one of the highest levels of the sport in the English Premier League ,combined to allow seven goals between them in their opening matches. More goals for sure could have hit the board for Poland, Greece, Spain, and Italy as well, and had shots ended up on target, more goals would be flying in.

Ukraine vs. Sweden Match Preview & Analysis: This is just one of these games where we are convinced that both sides are scoring. Neither one of these defenses is anywhere near quality of any sort, and both offenses have a heck of a lot of strikers and attacking midfielders that have been at the top of their game at this level. In the end, we expect to see plenty of goals – at least three for sure. And, we wouldn’t be all that surprised if this turns out to be one of the highest scoring fixtures of the tournament, especially knowing that Ukraine has been playing these 3-2 games (and the likes) a ton over the course of its friendlies leading up to this fixture.

Ukraine European Cup 2012: Euro 2012 Odds & Group D Predictions

Ukraine Euro 2012: Hosts Will Have Their Chances In Group D: Attack, attack, attack. That is going to be the motto this year for Ukraine, as it prepares for the Euro 2012 that it is hosting. The Ukrainians are clearly going to have a chance this year to do some real damage in this tournament, but they are going to need to make sure that they overachieve on their home front to make as big of a case for being one of the top teams in Europe.

In comparison to Poland, there is no doubt that Ukraine has the tougher of the draws of the two hosts. Playing in a group with England and France clearly isn’t going to be all that easy, and even this opening match against Sweden isn’t going to be a cakewalk by any stretch of the imagination either. Still, with matches coming at home, there is no doubt that the possibility is there that the hosts can prevail even though they are ranked just No. 52 in the world, along the same lines as teams like Zambia (43), Montenegro (50), Armenia (51), El Salvador (55), and Honduras (56).

Euro 2012 Schedule for Ukraine

Tuesday June 19th: England vs. Ukraine 2:45 p.m. (ET) (ESPN)

What we know about the Ukrainians is that they are going to attack, and they are going to continue to pile on the pressure in virtually every game that they play. That doesn’t mean that they are going to be scoring goals, but they definitely are going to be trying their damnedest. There are five strikers on this team that are going to be used on a regular basis. We figure to see Andriy Shevchenko, the team’s most talented and veteran striker off of the bench, especially in close matches. These five players have played in a tremendous 276 games between them. Shevchenko has 46 goals to his credit for his country, while the rest of the strikers combined have 23.

Defensively, there are a heck of a lot of problems, though. Andriy Pyatov is going to be the net minder for this team, but the Shakhtar Donetsk keeper just isn’t the best in the world. In front of him, there isn’t a defender that has played in even 30 games for his country. We do think that Pyatov’s teammate, Yaroslav Rakitskiy is a man that has a lot of potential on both sides of the ball. He has played in 17 matches in his career for Ukraine, but he also has scored three times in those matches.

The problem here is that all of these teams have a lot of potential offensively ,and none of them are ridiculously bad defensively in Group D. That being said, they have the help of playing at home, where they are going to be glad to be playing again. Their last two matches before this tournament came on the road at Turkey and Austria, and in those games, it should be no surprise that the squad conceded five total goals, losing 2-0 to the Turks and 3-2 to the Austrians. Before that though, there has been a lot for the Ukrainians to smile at. They netted four against Estonia, two against Austria, three against Germany, and three against Bulgaria at home in the last few months.

Ukraine 2012 Euro Championship Tips & Euro 2012 Betting Odds: BetOnline Sportsbook is featuring the Ukrainians to get out of this group at +140. That being said, they are a 4 to 1 underdog to win this group, but they are at least a tad in front of the Swedes. Poland has the slightly better chance to win this tournament because of the fact that Group A is so iffy, but the Ukrainians have the more talented side. Still, Ukraine is 50 to 1 to be the champ of its own tournament at home, which makes it one of the big time have nots in Euro 2012.
